John Thomas Alsop was born in Chatteris in 1839, son of a blacksmith, george Alsop. In 1860 he married Anne Snelling. By 1884 he was described as an ‘Art Iron Worker and Smith.’ By 1887 his older sons were being taken into the business. His business was called The Britannia Works after the Britannia Inn opposite.
For Alsop family after 1881 see 85 East Road.
