Longthorpe Roman Settlement, Peterborough

History of Longthorpe

Wikipedia article about Longthorpe:

Roman Britian article:

It seems that Petillius Cerilais, legate of the IXth Legion led a force from Longthorpe but was badly mauled and retreated back with only his cavalry, about 1000 men. A new, smaller fort was built.

See Defending Cambridge, Mike Osborne, (2013) for a detailed description of the importance Roman fortification in the area.
