The building on the right, a residential property dating back to the 15th century, was formerly an inn called the George and Dragon.
C15 and C16 house, formerly an inn. Timber-framed, two-bayed hall and cross-wing to
west, with C16 inserted floors,
The thatched Memorial Shelter and Clock Tower was built in 1902, erected in memory of G W Brown by Mr Whymper, builder G. Page of Buckden. Clock made by J. R. Ingram, St Ives.
Bronze bust of Potto Brown surmounted on granite plinth with three inscribed panels.
‘Potto Brown was born in this village 16th July 1797 where he spent his life devoting
himself to the best interests of those around him and died 12th April 1871.’
Potto Brown, the miller, built Houghton Chapel in 1840.
G.W. Brown was George Brown, the son of the miller, Potto Brown. Mr Whymper was Charles Whymper, resident of Houghton; he was an artist and the brother of Edward Whymper, the first man to climb the Matterhorn. (research by David Gent)
