Saxon bed burial – jewel and mosaic

A Saxon bed burial was found during excavations for Trumpington Meadows.

The burial was just south of Trumpington church and a jewelled cross (“The Trumpington Cross”) was found on the body of a lady lying on her back. A sculpture was commissioned as part of the features of the Trumpington Meadows Country Park. It was designed by Katherine Clarke of MUF architecture and can be found near the River Cam south of Byron’s Pool. It was inspired by Holbein’s ‘Body of Christ’ and includes modern references to a laptop, my little pony, mobile phone, toy car and a lamprey. The excavation was carried out by the Cambridge Archaeological Unit.
