George Kett was born in Wymondham, Norfolk. His father, George, was a skilled carpenter and in 1837 was involved in restoration work at Norwich Cathedral. While at Norwich, Kett senior met James Rattee, a fellow Norfolk man. George Kett was employed to work within the new Houses of Parliament at Westminster. His worked pleased the architect Pugin and he was employed for several years. he was selected to carve the Royal Coat of Arms in the Chamber of the House of Lords. During this period the whole family lived in London.

George Kett senior went into partnership with James Rattee in 1848 and moved to Petersfield, East Road, Cambridge.

James Rattee died in 1855 and the responsibility for running the business fell on George Kett senior and his apprentice son, George.
