SR contacted the Museum of Cambridge with the following information in 2020:
My great grandparents Thomas and Susan Stepney bought the Earl of Durham [before 1911?]. The building was condemned and was converted into a family home and business. There was enough land for stables and carriages (cabs) for hire and heavy horses were kept on Coldhams Common for Council work. The goats supplied Gandhi with milk when he visited Cambridge in 1931. The many children all worked in some way to support the household and kept rabbits and chickens. the horses were later replaced by lorries and a haulage company based in Ditton Walk where several of the brothers set up businesses. Stepney Brothers Ltd still remains there as a vehicle repair garage.
