History of 34 Halifax Road

1913 unnumbered

William Henry Swift

1940 01 05

Councillor William Henry Swift has died suddenly at his home, 34 Halifax Road, aged 73. A familiar Cambridge figure, he gave almost 20 years of uninterrupted service to the Town Council. First elected for West Chesterton in 1920, he became one of the three Castle Ward councillors following the redistribution of seats in 1935. Born near Harrogate in 1866, he came to Cambridge at an early age to work at the University Press. He retired as head of its Reading Department in May 1931, after more than 50 years during which he saw the Press buildings double and treble in size. 40 01 05
