4 Priory Street, Cambridge

History of 4 Priory Street, Cambridge

1913

David Moore, Band of Hope agent

In 1913, a Band of Hope agent was a paid, full-time professional or traveling missionary working for the United Kingdom Band of Hope Union (or its regional branches). The Band of Hope was a massive, Christian-led British temperance organization specifically dedicated to educating working-class children on the dangers of alcohol and prompting them to sign a pledge of total abstinence. Rather than sitting in an office, an “agent” operated as a localized organizer, field lecturer, and event coordinator.
