Garret Hostel and Clare Bridge by R H Leach c.1812?

Garret Hostel Bridge

History of Garret Hostel Bridge

The bridge in the Gothic style is made of ashlar and cast-iron and was designed by William Chadwell and built between 1835 and 1837 for £960.

Six previous bridges at the site are known, the earliest in 1591. A reconstruction in 1769 by James Essex and designed by Mr Ethridge of brick and timber was known as the Mathematical bridge.  It broke down in the summer of 1812 and the replacement was at the joint expense of Trinity College and the town.
