26 March 1904 – Sale of the Millers Arms
The sale of the Millers Arms in March 1904 illustrates the growing commercial importance of King Street in Edwardian Cambridge. Auctioneers J. Carter Jonas offered the fully licensed public house together with an adjoining house, workshops, stables and business premises. Particular emphasis was placed on the property’s future potential, arguing that the planned widening of nearby Sussex Street would make King Street an increasingly important commercial thoroughfare. The property eventually sold for £3,700 to Mr Nockolds, demonstrating the confidence investors had in the future development of this part of the city. The sale also provides a valuable snapshot of the mixed commercial character of King Street, where licensed premises, workshops, stables and family accommodation existed side by side.
