26 St Andrew’s Street

History of 26 St Andrew's Street

The Grand Arcade excavation report (2019) notes:

This plot (Plot XVIII) was occupied by a butcher in 1841 and then by a series of bakers from c. 1851 onwards. By 1855 the plot has heavily built over. Many of the new structures were built in the 1840s or 1850s as they included a specialized bake house oven with ‘covered flues’ but this had left no trace. A small pit, Pit 62, was dug c. 1873–1900 to dispose of some domestic refuse including a potted game container. Developments in the 1880s at Plot XVII meant that Plot XVIII was partially enclosed by substantial walls and by 1885 the garden had been built over.
