Bert Jeffery, 22, assistant butcher, born Newmarket


This was for many years the business premises of A. and A. Mears fishmongers and poulterers. In 1964 the firm had already been going for 40 years. It was started by Mr A T Mears whose widow was still active in the shop in the 1960s. Her two sons. Arthur and Alan, took over on their return from World War Two, Alan running the shop and Arthur the poultry farm which supplied it.
