The school was founded by Roger Jenyns in 1730. Originally there was a relief of a boy with a book in one hand and a cap in the other. This relief is now in the church. The children had uniforms: boys, a long green coat with brass buttons and red stockings. The cap had a red tassel and the sleeves were edged in muslin bands. The girls’ dresses were of a green material with a white cap and white bonnet. The beneficiaries of the charity were known as ‘Charity Boys’.
