Courtyard in Broad Street, Ely, with communal pump c.1838 (pencil, Henry Baines)Ann Powell recalled in The Way We Remember It: Opposite the show room was St Peter’s Church. My aunties took me there on summer evenings to sit beneath the six winged seraphim and listen to Evensong. It had a thriving congregation of maiden ladies, a choir of local boys, a Sunday School ruled by Miss Langhorn and an endless supply of budding priests from the Theological College at the top of Back Hill.
