According to Recollections of Old Ely, Audrey Denton, the Ladder House was built on the corner of a small arable field where the brewery of the day grew mangolds for horse fodder. This field was known as ‘Sibleys.’ Audrey was told by a Mr Mason that in the 1920s the Ladder House was owned by the brewery and was known in the firm as Noah’s Ark because of the shape of the building. On the ground floor were stored everything needed by the coopers to make the barrels of different sizes.
