Mabel Demaine recalled: “The village grocers delivered the goods, his grocer boy coming round to your door with a long pencil tucked behind his ear – his long white apron flapping between his legs and a big notebook in his pocket to take your order. I can remember Sid Carter doing the round for Doyley’s, he would run over a long list, sugar, tea, lard, salt, mustard, vinegar, pepper on and on he would go, chewing his pencil and jotting down the order, later in the week the goods would be delivered. Tebbutt’s at the Top Shop, had a pony and cart to deliver their goods and the bakers also had a pony and cart. Tebbutt’s shop is now an International Supermarket and Doyley’s is a first class Drapery Shop well stocked with the latest fashions in ladies, children and men’s wear, as well as wools, materials, wall paper, boots and shoes and fancy goods”.
