Josh Scott interviews

Josh Scott, interviewed by Kevin Delanoy in his home at Littleport in 1981

Josh was one of a very big family (six sons and six daughters) whose father was a shepherd on the Welney Washes. After service in WWII Josh came home and took over the shepherding and wildfowling way of life.

He recalls the excitement of skating competitions when the washes froze over and men raced for such prizes as a joint of meat. In 1969 he was invited by Peter Scott (no relation) if he would take over the work of being warden of the New WWT Centre on the Hundred Foot Washes. He knows the Washes very well and recalls Will Kent, his uncle, and Ernie James one of the last wildfowlers. His story is told in his book “From Guns to Binoculars” with a foreword by Sir Peter Scott.
