Overfall drainage mill at Ely was a giant structure that lifted water from the Middle Fen Drain into the River Ouse. Such wind pumps needed constant attention or sudden squalls could cause damage, or blow them across the fen. The Cross family ran the mill for several generation. This is a rare view of the living quarters at the base of the mill before its demolition in 1917.
