The Burystead, Sutton, 1920s

The initial grant of land, 360 acres, to Ely was made by Wulside and his wife after the refounding of the abbey in 973 following the Danish invasion. By 1291 the manor was valued at £64 15s 5d. At the Dissolution in 1541 it was transferred to the Dean and Chapter. In the 18th century it was leased to the Ward family who may have built the 1742 south wing. (See The Religious Houses of Cambridgeshire, CCC, 1988)

It was once surrounded by a moat and was the site of a burial ground.
