History of Troston House

The house was built for my grandfather, Joseph Stanley Prior, for him and my grandmother to live in on their marriage.  It was built by him, his father, Uriah and brothers.  The proceeds for the building came from a property they built in the village of Troston near Bury St Edmunds, hence the name.  The family had lived in what was called Welland Cottage until this time.  It has now been renamed.  My grandfather also converted three cottages on the opposite side if the road into one.  This is now the surgery.  The family also owned the field behind now Prior’s Court. As a child there were other buildings in the yard which apparently were wooden houses.  They formed an L-shape from the top of Windmill Lane. We used them as a garage and one of Grandad’s workshops, although his main one was on land next to Chestnut House. Grandad is buried on the churchyard as is his father, mother & wife.
