March railway stationThe railway brought a large number of jobs to March and at one poiunt employed 23 per cent of the male workforce. Lord Peckover at Wisbech had lobbied against a railway station and so March was preferred.
The second marshalling yard opened in January 1933 at a cot of £300,000. It accommodated up to 17,273 and was one of the largest railway marshalling complexes in the world. 200 engones could be housed in the locomotive depot.
There was an annual Railway Queen competition for the daughters of railway men.
