History of the Manor House

Manor house. c.1585 possibly built for William Mallory (d.1586), plaster cartouches of Mallory arms and initials in hall and chamber.

Dovehouse. c.1700.

The Manor House was described by Dora Tack in 1943 (D Tack, From Bombs to Buckets, 1989)

It was severely damaged by fire on Christmas Day 1953.

It was advertised for sale in 1984.

Occupant in 1942: Mrs Mary Butler

Built in 1585 for family of Sir William Mallory. Later passed to the Carter family. Old boundary line between Cambridgeshire  and ‘Huntingdonshire’ passed through the Manor House. “Mrs Butler slept in a four poster bed complete with heavy red curtains. When my mother asked if she ever felt lonely, she replied that that she never felt alone because her late husband was always with her.”

Mrs Butler was the appointed driver for the village of Papworth St Agnes during the war. She tool villagers to th doctor or hosital when public tansport was not available.
