The Waits, St Ives

History of the Waits

The origin of the name Waits for this location next to the river is obscure. In the 1890s boats were hired out from here.

A group of people stands on a flooded street alongside buildings in St Ives, with a church spire visible in the background.

The Waits, August 1912 (Norris)

Between WWI and WWII the area was raised to create flowerbeds. Later new flood walls were installed.
