History of the The Royal Standard

21 April 1900
A serious runaway omnibus accident occurred outside the Royal Standard. The horse bus was standing opposite the public house while the driver was talking on the pavement when the horses suddenly bolted. Two women passengers jumped from the top deck before the vehicle careered along Mill Road, colliding first with a carrier’s cart from Orwell and then with another cart from Bottisham. The incident illustrates the Royal Standard’s role as a well-known landmark on one of Cambridge’s busiest roads. Source: Mike Petty, Cambridge Mill Road Scrapbook 1897–1990.

26 January 1935
A correspondent recalled the opening of the Mill Road footbridge over the railway on 3 August 1889. The letter noted that, before the surrounding streets were developed, the bridge led directly into open countryside. It also recalled that when the Royal Standard was first built many regarded it as isolated and premature, nicknaming it “Apthorpe’s Folly”after the brewer William Apthorpe who erected it. The reminiscence captures how dramatically Romsey Town expanded around what had once seemed an outlying inn. Source: Mike Petty, Cambridge Mill Road Scrapbook 1897–1990.
