History of 331 High Street, Cottenham
Listed building:
House, mid C19. Gault brick with slate roof and ridge stack. Single range plan. Two storeys.
1827
from Francis Garrett, Cottenham Ablaze:
This fire, 11.6.1827, believed to be the work of an arsonist, started on a haystack on the farm of William Ivatt (now the Village College) and spread to the premises of John Taylor, 331 High Street, and on to the building behind 333 to 343 High Street facing the Village Green, and then burned all the houses from 1 Histon Road to the end of the then village near the present Dunstal Field estate entrance. Ten families were made homeless.
The fire was attended by engines from Cottenham and Willingham, and then by insurance companies’ fire engines from Cambridge.
Damage:
Farm and house of John Taylor destroyed
William Ivatt junior’s farm buildings destroyed but not the house because it was brick built and tiled.
Thomas Ivatt’s farm buildings destroyed but because of a tiled dove house other buildings were saved.
Histon Road: James Low, James Porter – cottages belonging to Maulden’s Charity destroyed
Edward Burkett’s house destroyed; premises of Hobson’s Charity
Joseph Moore’s cottage destroyed
There was one death and one serious injury.
