History of Chrishall Grange

CAS 2005 contains: Chrishall Grange, Fowlmere: a Settlement in Eight Landscapes by Christopher Taylor.
The monograph looks at the evidence of a late Saxon landscape but much clearer and better documented is the property in medieval times. From 12th century until 1536 Chrishall Grange had belonged to the Cistercian Abbey of Tilty in Essex. Chrishall Grange was an early gift to Tilty.
After the Dissolution, the land was sold in 1544 by the Crown to Edward Elvington and Humphrey Medcalf. Two years later they sold it on to Edward Meades.

1601 Grange sold to Sir Thomas Meade of Guilden Morden
1717 Grange belonged to John Hanchett. The Hanchett family were probably responsible for the main farmhouse which dates from just after 1700.
1768 Chrishall Grange purchased by Thomas Brand of The Hoo in Herts. Belonged to Brand family until 1970.
