Well Cottage, 36 High Street, Guilden Morden

History of Well Cottage

Listed Building

Cottage. Late C17 or C18. (Historic England)

GH sent this note in 2025:

This was my Great Aunt Nellie’s cottage; she lived there with her husband. Her sister ran Goldthorpe’s shop in Biggleswade, which was the family business. My mother ( b 1917) had memories of travelling on the handlebars of her father’s bike ( Arthur Goldthorpe); he was brother to the two sisters. Between the shop and the cottage there are a couple of Goldthorpes buried in Guilden Morden church (they were a very long lived family!). My mother had very happy memories of staying at Goldthorpe’s in Biggleswade, eating wonderful food and going on long walks and swimming in the river. I remember visiting Well Cottage in the 60s; the whole interior was furnished with antiques ( which was unusual even then); it was a very quiet and rural setting, miles away from civilisation!
