Fire Engine House, Hinxton

History of Fire Engine House

Hinxton, OS 1901

Sarah Stutter of Manor farm left £100 to the parish in 1830 to buy a fire engine which was shared with Ickleton. The pump was worked by two men on either side and when it was needed John Page, horsekeeper to Mr Robinson of Hinxton Hall, would fetch a horse to pull it. It was used in the disastrous 1921 fire which destroyed much of the summer harvest and equipment. (Vanishing Cambridgeshire p.123)
