35 High Street, The Plague House, Landbeach

History of the Plague House

Cottage. Late medieval, early C16. Timber framed and plastered, C19 gault brick. Norfolk Reed partly thatched thatched roof.

W K Clay, A History of the Parish of Landbeach, told the story of how two old ladies ran away from the 1665-1666 plague in London and came to Landbeach. They came to this house only for it to be apparent they had brought the plague. The others who died in the village were the rector’s son and servants. Data for Landbeach suggests that there was an epidemic of some kind in 1666 as 16 people died, compared to the usual couple. ((See Evelyn Lord, The Great Plague, p.93)
