History of Saintfoins

Saintfoins, Little Shelford OS 1901

Fanny Wale writes at length in Shelford Parva about this property. The name comes from the herb of the same nae that was cultivated in the area. there was a walled-in garden, coach houses and stables.

House built by Hensen, Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge.

Mr Beals bought the house but lost money in horseracing. he had to hide in the kitchen flue for about a week while bailiffs were about.

Charles Brent Wale, barrister, who married Henrietta Whately. C B Wale was seriously injoued by poachers and circa 1850 sold the property to his younger brother Colonel R G Wale.

Dr Ficklin

1860 Hamer Towgood bought the estate from Colonel R C Wale. Hamer Towgood became well-known as an exhibitor of horses and cows.

1914 Hamer Towgood died. He owned the paper mills at Sawston. His nephew, James Towgood, took over management of the paper-mill.
