Pevsner’s Cambridgeshire p 304-5 (2014) describes it as ‘a vast, confusing, ever-growing complex by the city’s boundary, visible for miles in the flat landscape.’ The only part singled out for praise is the ‘giant, fluted, ever-roaring chimney.’

Title: Land acquired for the new Addenbrooke’s Hospital
Summary: The Ministry of Health authorised Addenbrooke’s Hospital to acquire nearly 44 acres between Hills Road and Long Road for a proposed replacement hospital. Financial restrictions postponed other projects, including new operating theatres, delivery wards and a premature-baby unit.

Title: Bus provision proposed for the new hospital
Summary: Addenbrooke’s governors agreed that the Eastern Counties Omnibus Company could purchase land opposite the proposed hospital for a bus stop. The hospital also intended to provide a three-bus stopping place and passenger shelter near its main entrance. Additional services via Perne Road and Fendon Road were suggested.

Title: Construction begins on the new Addenbrooke’s Hospital
Summary: Work began on the new hospital. Its first phase included a 100-bed ward block, while the completed hospital was expected to contain between 600 and 800 beds. Landscape architect J. M. Hayward planned the grounds with assistance from the University Botanic Garden.

Title: New Addenbrooke’s criticised for its architecture
Summary: A review of modern Cambridge architecture described the new hospital buildings as bleak and likened their general appearance to barracks. Although their functional efficiency was acknowledged, the sprawling outpatient buildings were said to do little to improve the design.

Title: Cardiac unit proposed for Addenbrooke’s
Summary: The Regional Health Authority proposed closing Papworth Hospital’s cardiac unit and replacing it with a 90-bed unit at Addenbrooke’s. The Hills Road facility would include operating theatres and supporting services, with construction potentially beginning in 1985.

Title: Opposition to moving Papworth’s heart unit to Addenbrooke’s
Summary: Consultants supported transferring Papworth Hospital’s heart unit to Addenbrooke’s, where specialist and support services were available. Health authority officials opposed the proposal because the Hills Road site was already overcrowded and needed to accommodate replacements for Mill Road Hospital and a psychiatric unit.

Title: Congestion rules out Papworth move to Addenbrooke’s
Summary: Plans for replacing Papworth Hospital included rebuilding it, moving it to Hinchingbrooke or upgrading its existing buildings. An earlier proposal to transfer it to Addenbrooke’s was set aside because the Hills Road site was already congested.
