On the census sheet filled in by the householder the family name might seem to be written ‘Halman’, as indeed it has been subsequently transcribed on the associated database accessible through Ancestry.com. However the cover sheet filled in by the census enumerator has Mr H Flatman written very clearly. The problem seems to lie in Mr Flatman’s handwriting which is very misleading.

Nathaniel Flatman [Halman], 69, brewer’s and wine merchant’s agent, born Cambs

Alice Ann [Halman], 70,  born Suffolk

Alec E [Halman], son, 33, commercial traveller legal stationery, born Chippenham

Laura [Halman], daughter-in-law, 33, born London

Christine Joyce [Halman], grand-daughter, 2, born London

Florence Allen, servant, 19, born Essex

Alice Halman had had 7 children, four of which were still alive in 1911.
