Argyle Street, Cambridge

Argyle Street developed in the 19th century alongside the railway, reflecting the growth of working Cambridge and its connections beyond the university.

Argyle Street forms part of the late 19th-century expansion of Cambridge, closely linked to the arrival of the railway and the growth of new employment opportunities. Terraced housing in this area accommodated workers and their families, contributing to a rapidly expanding urban population.

Situated away from the historic university core, the street represents the everyday life of the town, shaped by industry, transport, and local communities. At the same time, its proximity to central Cambridge has brought increasing interaction with student housing and university-related activity.

Argyle Street highlights the ways in which Cambridge developed as both a university city and a working town, with overlapping but distinct identities.
