An Introduction to Cambridge South Asian Heritage Month

Cambridge South Asian History Month

On 22 July 2019, South Asian Heritage Month was launched in the Houses of Parliament, as a celebration and acknowledgment of the culture, history and lives of South Asian people living in the United Kingdom today.

This is our first Cambridge South Asian History Month. Members of the community have contributed to a programme of events and activities supported by Cambridge City Council and hosted by Capturing Cambridge, which is run by the Museum of Cambridge.

Capturing Cambridge is a website dedicated to sharing the stories of people who have lived in, and contributed to the overall story, of Cambridge. The Museum is delighted to host this month and engage directly with members of the South Asian communities in
the City.

This first programme is unusual in that we would have expected some of the events to be live. Of course, at this time we are unable to host actual events, but we hope that the virtual aspects of the programme can be accessed and enjoyed by all.

The programme consists of talks and lectures, articles, cookery demonstrations, a Bollywood dance class, an audio play, and films looking at the history, spirituality and meanings of dances from South Asia. All the contributors live in Cambridge.

We are aware that this month is celebrated at different times in different cities across the U.K., but in Cambridge we have chosen 15th June – 15th July for our celebrations. Activities and events will be added throughout this period, so please check in regularly so as not to miss anything.

We hope you enjoy Cambridge’s South Asian History Month!
