13 Kingston Street

The History of the Lucock Family

1881

Thomas and Jane Ruse live here in 1881 with their four children.  Thomas is a 47 year old carpenter and joiner from Newmarket.  Jane is 40 and was born in Middlesex.  Their eldest son, 15 year old George William, is a junior clerk.  Henry (13), Bertha (10) and Matilda (7) are all school children. The family have a boarder, George Medlow, an apprentice carpenter from Waterbeach.

1891

In 1891, 13 Kingston Street is home to two brothers, Fred and Frank Lucock. Fred, 23, works as a Fireman on the railway, shovelling the coal and managing the water on steam engines. Frank, 21, works as a grocer’s assistant. Staying over at No. 13 is the brother’s mother, Mary Curtis, a 54 year old retiree from Essex, ‘living on her own means.’

1901

By 1901, neither Fred nor Frank are present, though Isabella Lucock, a 68 year old Widow from Manningtree, is clearly a family member of the brothers. Furthermore, Mary Curtis, Isabella’s sister, the same Mary Curtis who is living here in 1891, is now 73 and also still living here. Both Isabella and Mary are listed as ‘Living on their own means.’

1911

By 1911, Isabella Lucock, now 78, lives alongside her sisters Mary Ann Curtis, now 85, and Caroline Curtis, aged 80. All three hail from Manningtree; all are likely retired as they have no occupations listed.
