Number 24 is one of a terrace of seven houses on the east side of Ainsworth Street.

1891 – 1939
Head of household in 1891 is Charles Chandler, a 30-year-old kitchen porter from Haslingfield. He lives here with his wife Ann, their son James (3) and Ann’s daughter Sarah Badcock (5). William Thompson, Charles’ brother-in-law is also living with them. William is 13 and an errand boy.
On the 1901 Census Charles is now a general labourer and the couple now have five children. James is now 13 and an errand boy. Charles is 11, Rose Ann is 8, Alice is 5 and Ernest is 3.
Alice died in 1904.
Sarah is working as a domestic servant to a family on Mawson Road, she marries in 1909.
The 1911 census records that Charles is now a platelayer for the Great Eastern Railway. Charles and Ann have been married for 23 years and have had six children. Four of those children are still alive. James, Rose and Ernest are all still living at home with their parents.
Their son Charles is living with his Uncle William Thompson who used to lodge with Chandler’s in 1891. Charles works on the Great Northern Railway.
James married Gertrude Sergent in 1918, the wedding being reported in the Cambridge Daily News on the 19 September 1918. “A pretty wedding took place at St Matthew’s Church, on September 12th when Miss Gertrude Susan Sargent… of School House, East Road was married to Sapper James Chandler of Ainsworth Street.”
The couple moved to 2 Oswald Terrace on Sturton Street in 1924. James lived there until he died.
The 1921 Census for 24 Ainsworth Street records Charles and Ernest both working for G.E.R. Charles remains a platelayer, and Ernest, now 23, is a platform porter.
Charles (senior) died in 1929. Ann continued to live at number 24 Ainsworth Street until 1939.
