63 Ainsworth Street
The Family of a Grocer's Assistant
Number 59 is one of a three terraced houses on the west side of Ainsowrth Street.
1880 – 1897
Gibbs Pate, a 62-year-old Grocers Assistant, who was born in Harlton, has moved to Ainsworth Street from Coronation Place. He lives there with his wife Ellen (nee Smith, born in Hilgay, Norfolk) and his children Elizabeth Ann (23, a Draper’s assistant), Thomas (22, worker on the Great Eastern Railway) and Edward Albert (17, a Carpenter’s assistant).
Thomas sails to the USA in 1887 aboard the Lord Clive. He marries Ellen in 1890 and they settle in New York. Thomas works as a tailor; he dies in New York in December 1930.
Edward (now known as Albert) stays in Cambridge and marries Laura Dodd in 1889. The 1891 Census sees them living at the City Arms (now The Dobblers) on Sturton Street. He’s a carpenter and publican, they have twin sons called Frederick and Albert. He dies in 1892.
Elizabeth marries James Phillips, from 2 Upper Gwydir Street, in the Summer of 1881. James dies in 1889, aged 30. Elizabeth, and her daughter Ellen, move back in with her parents, where she becomes a Dressmaker. She marries tailor Robert Beales in 1893, they live at 111 Sturton Street.
On the 1891 Census, Gibbs and Ellen are joined by their 29-year-old son Samuel Gibbs Pate. He is a Petty Officer Second Class in the Royal Navy. Currently home on leave from the Serapis. Samuel stays with the Navy until December 1900 but re-joins in December 1914. In May 1915, whilst serving at the Victory I (an accounting base at Portsmouth), he is invalided out with pneumonia.
Samuel marries Alice Dunn in 1914, they live on Charles Street.
Gibbs has moved to 31 Kingston Street by 1901, he died in 1905.

James and Alice are 38 years married. They had 2 children, 1 of whom has died.
