73 Ainsworth Street

A Plot of Land that has now been Developed

1881–1921

In the census records for 1881 to 1921 there are no residents listed for 73 Ainsworth Street, and the reason is probably because there was no building as such, just a plot of land assigned to this number. In the 1895 Spalding’s Directory it is described as ‘Garden Ground’.  There are several neighbours with the occupation of gardener, including the neighbour at no. 79, who was possibly growing hops for the off-licence.

On Ainsworth Street today there is a no. 75 occupied by a retired printer, who used to work for Foister & Jagg when it was located on York Street. The owner was told that the plot for no. 73 used to be a track with access through to Sturton Street for the Kerridge building yard.  Now the plot contains a garage for no. 75 with an extension above, i.e. no. 75 effectively covers two house plots, nos. 73 and 75.
