The History of the Gustard Family

1881

The Gustard family live here in 1881.  Richard Gustard is 53 and a boiler smith, born in Northumberland.  His wife Jane is 54 and was born in Carlisle.  They have three children: 20 year old Jane and 15 year old Mary both work as dressmakers, and youngest daughter Isabella is 13 and still at school.

1891

In 1891, 61 Kingston Street remains home to the Gustard family. Jane is now 64, Richard is 63 and still making boilers.  Daughters Mary, 25, and Isabella, 22, now both work as dressmakers.

1901

By 1901, 61 Kingston Street is still home to the Gustards. Richard, now 75, is a retired Boiler Maker. Jane, now 72, Mary, 32 and Isabella, now 30, all work as dressmakers.  The 1901 Census records Jane as being “Feeble-minded”.

1911

By 1911, Emily Gustard, aged 43 (one of Richard and Jane’s eldest daughters not present on either of the above three censuses),  working as a dressmaker, and her youngest sister Isabella, now 41, are the only two residents at number 61.
