1881

1884 – 1903

Head of household, William Squires, has moved here with his wife and two daughters from 42 Sturton Street.  The electoral rolls show William registered at this property from 1884.

William and Betsey’s son Albert married Florence Carter in 1890.  He is now living on Stockwell Street and working as a Postman.  Daughter Florence isn’t living with her parents on 1891 census, but on the 11th September 1892 she married Leonard Goodliffe (builder’s clerk) at St Barnabas.

In 1891 William is 49 and working as a railway porter.  Betsey is 53.  Daughter Alice Annie is 23, Mary Maria is 17 and both are dressmakers.

Alice married James Alfred Bidwell, a butcher of 85B East Road, on the 16th May 1892. In 1901 the couple can be found at 130 Sturton Street with their daughter Ivy.

Mary married Alfred Joseph Monk in 1896.  They move to Camberwell in London.

Betsey died in 1902 and William died in 1903.  They are buried together in Mill Road Cemetery.

1908 – 1915

Head of household in 1911 is Henry Gilby (or Gilbey), a 36 year old journeyman tailor.  He is married to Alice, aged 38.  They have recorded that he was born in the Parish of St. Andrew’s and she in the Parish of St. Paul’s. They have an adopted daughter, Adelaide Julie Gilbey, who is 13 and attends school.

The 1911 Census also records that they have been married for 13 years and have had no children. The electoral register shows that Henry lived here from 1908 to, at least, 1915.

Henry’s father William and sister Laura live next door at 22 Sturton Street. Henry grew up on Staffordshire Street (1881) and Miford Street (1891).  His parents and sister Laura are buried in Mill Road Cemetery.
