History of Emmanuel House

The Cambridge Ghost Book, Halliday and Murdie, 2000, includes an account of the apparitions at this address, recorded in the files of the  Society for Psychical Research.

The Harris family moved here in 1867. The mother, Emily, saw a female veiled figure by her bed.  A boy servant, who was not told about the apparitions, later witnessed an identical figure.

The next tenant, Miss Bowen, and her maid Kate, heard footsteps.

The house next became a girls’ boarding school. In 1884 teacher Miss Bellamy saw a strange lady gliding across the hall. Miss Bellamy gave a very clear account of what she had seen. It was only later that a tradition was revealed that three previous occupants of Emmanuel Lodge had committed suicide.

In 1893 the building was demolished to make way for the present Lodge.
