Miss Iris Franklin was interviewed for the CWN (March) about Norfolk Street. She was the former headmistress of St Matthew’s Infant School. She had started teaching there in 1935 and became headteacher in 1946.
“I did the billeting for the evacuees during the war. We used to go after school to what is now the Young Street College to make gas masks. We fitted both the children and the local elderly people with gas masks in the school. It was reassuring for the old people to come to us in the school.”
