This was the site of the Liberal Club back in the days of World War One, but today’s Rathmore Club has no political affiliation. It was saved in 1981 by Patrick and Helen Munnelly who took it over when shareholders had been unable to raise the £70,000 necessary to reopen the club.

In 2016 Tony Whitmore reminisced about the history of the  Club of which his grandfather, the builder Edward Cowell of 159 Cherry Hinton Road, was a founder member.
