In the 1920s and 30s this was the business premises of Fred W Drake and his son Hugh, herbalists. In 1987 Hugh recalled in the CWN how busy the shop had been with visitors who could not afford to visit the doctor. Fred Drake had worked for many years for a firm of manufacturing chemists which caused him to doubt the value of many preparations being offered as cures in those days.
He started to study herbal medicine in his spare time and in 1922 gave up his job to open a herbalists in his home town. Met initially with skepticism, his firm, Draland Herbal Stores eventually thrived and he became local representative for W H Box, one of the best known herbal firms in the country.
