Stetchworth House

History of Stetchworth House

Listed Building

Small country house. Built by Richard Eaton, c.1786, altered 1870.

Stables dated 1883 on plaque above main entrance.

Round House to north-west of Stetchworth House – Folly. Mid C19.

Most of the woodland and a large proportion of the arable land belonged to the Earl of Ellesmere’s Stetchworth Estate. The Earl spent most of his time on his Scottish holding but the family owned Stetchworth Park House and he came down for the big race meetings and for the autumn and winter shooting parties. Day to day management fell to the agent or bailiff who assumed the authority of landowner.
