In 1923 W M Palmer (Camb Chron.) wrote:
This manor was held directly of the King by the service of attending him when he came to Cambridge and holding his stirrup when he mounted his palfry at Cambridge Castle. It had been given by William the Conqueror to William his chamberlain. Lady Margaret Dovedale had a license to hear mass in her oratory here in 1337.
