According to their granddaughter (2020) they had run the corner shop here from at least the Second World War. John was away during the war and Catherine found the shop hard to run. The shop was closed and it was turned into their front room, a very large sitting room, which was only used for special occasions. The property was probably the biggest house on Coronation Street.
