History of Garden Gate

 

1806 no building shown on Enclosure map. Site called Dodds Close, owned by Thomas Panton.

1829 James Carter listed as owner of house and gardens

1850 James Carter owner; Jacob Ellwood, publican.


1851 Clay Street

Jacob Ellwood, 40, brewer and gardener, b Longstanton

Rebecca, 40, b Cottenham

James, 15, b Histon

Charles, 13, b Histon

William, 11, b Histon, dumb

John Kingsley, lodger, 36, labourer, b Baldock

Sarah Kingsley, lodger, 40, b Baldock


1866 Inquest held in January on the 9 week old child of the Ellwoods.

1868 James Ellwood, son, publican. He died aged 35 in 1872.


1871 Clay Street


1877 Mrs R Ellwood owner, Thomas Chapman occupier.

1904 Jacob Cornell, publican

1912 Arthur Graves occupier and Sarah Papworth, owner.

This pub ceased trading in 1918 and was later demolished.
