12 The Green, Histon

12 The Green Histon

History of 12 The Green Histon

Listed building:

Cottage, originally three. C17 with modern alterations. Timber frame and plastered. Long straw thatched roofs.

Home of John Wilson, builder, whose business wound up in 1893. Large trees were brought to his premises to be cut up; these were left on the Gree so the parish council charged him 18d per year for the privilege.

AW emailed in 2022:

I believe my grandfather’s brother Albert Thomas lived there as the village milkman. My grandfather lived at no.5 and I have heard a story of a relative helping in tackling a fire on the green. Could it have been there?

Mr Lawson ran a milk business here.

Matt Wynn removed the chimney and found it contained pieces of masonry from the destroyed church of St Etheldreda. One course of the brick work was made of horse bones. These were removed to the Cambridge Folk Museum. The ideas was to keep away evil spirits.
