George Parker (Post Office Directory)
George Parker was born in Findon 22 February 1829. He started working life as an agricultural labourer, although he had changed his occupation to domestic gardener by the time he married Elizabeth Smith at the Parish Church in Arundel in 1885. In the early 1860’s George, Elizabeth and their three children (Alice b:1856, George b:1857, Alfred b:1859) relocated, probably for work reasons, to Cambridge. They had one other child prior to moving to Cambridge – Frederick who was born in 1864, but died of Scarlet Fever after only four days. Their first known residence in Cambridge was in Russell Street in 1865, although by the time of the 1871 census they had moved to 13 Norwich Street in the parish of St Andrew. George’s occupation was recorded on the 1871 census as ‘Gardener & Licensed Victualler’. By this time, George and Elizabeth had three more children (Henry b:1865, William b:1969 and Rose Florence b:1871). Their eighth and final child (Edith May) was born in 1874 while they family were still living in Norwich Street (no.19). (Email from NS 2022)
